Fredericton researchers say the MedReviewRx app flags and reduces potentially inappropriate or unnecessary use of medications in nursing homes by cross-referencing patient profiles and prescriptions and sending an alert to the medical team when something doesn't match up. The tool also provides some reasoning, as well as reminders about how a particular medication can be safely scaled down. CIHI says about 30% of nursing home residents in N.B. were given antipsychotic drugs last year without a corresponding diagnosis and around half of LTC residents nationwide are taking 10 or more medications at the same time.
