The research found that 44% of all cancer deaths and 42% of healthy years lost could be attributable to preventable risk factors in 2019. The three leading risks are:

  • Smoking;
  • Drinking too much alcohol; or
  • Having a high BMI.

The leading cancers in terms of risk-attributable deaths globally in 2019 were tracheal, bronchus and lung cancer for both men and women, the researchers found. The data also show that risk-attributable cancer deaths are on the rise, increasing worldwide by 20% from 2010 to 2019.
