Pharmacists in Alta. are already allowed to prescribe certain medications, such as drugs for cold sores or urinary tract infections. A similar system is also coming to Ont. A B.C. pharmacist says allowing pharmacists to prescribe medication for minor ailments would cut down wait times for seeing a doctor. Even if the B.C. pharmacy association has been advocating this for years, pharmacists in B.C. aren’t allowed to prescribe medicine. They can only renew certain prescriptions before they expire as long as that prescription remained stable for approximately six months. Pharmacists in the province won't be able to prescribe new medication anytime soon as the Ministry of Health intends to focus on optimizing what pharmacists can currently do, rather than expanding their responsibilities.
