The federal government’s expected to launch a national diabetes strategy and advocates are emphasizing the importance of mental wellbeing for the plan. The survey found 43% of British Columbians who have the disease say it negatively impacts their emotional wellbeing and 38% say it negatively impacts their mental health. Specifically, 67% say their diabetes makes them feel isolated and 76% feel they're being judged for their diabetes and can’t be honest with their loved ones about their condition. An endocrinologist believes the federal strategy should involve increased funding, mental health counsellors, increased screening, prevention campaigns and medication cost support.
