Overworked and understaffed healthcare workers leaving their jobs over poor working conditions are becoming more alarming to health advocates, who are calling for federal assistance to address a Canada-wide nurses’ shortage. The president of the Canadian Federation of Nurses Union says fixing the workplace in the healthcare system is an urgent issue. She says the medical field faced staffing shortages before the pandemic and COVID-19 made matters worse. She points to Canadians who can’t get surgery or specialized treatments and ERs closing across the country because there aren’t enough nurses.
