For many people, prescription antidepressants and antipsychotics aren’t effective because of adverse reactions and side effects. U of A researchers developed genetic testing for the four enzymes most relevant to psychiatric drugs. People who have mutations in these enzymes can experience adverse drug reactions but if those mutations are identified, physicians can prescribe a different medication instead. The team is now offering testing for these genes in a pilot study for those with treatment-resistant mood disorders. The long-term goal is to have testing available through the provincial health system.
