Almost all health workers in the study felt the pandemic impacted their mental health and added stress to their work-life balance. In the fourth wave of the pandemic, between Sept. and Nov. of 2021, many were looking to leave or quit due to job stress or concerns around their mental health. Among healthcare workers not intending to retire at the time of the survey, nurses were most likely to say they wanted to change jobs, while one in four planned on changing their job or leaving their job in the next three years. While Statistics Canada reported most healthcare jobs were impacted by the pandemic, more nurses reported that the pandemic increased their workload. Other figures show:

  • Nine in ten nurses were more stressed at work than physicians, personal support workers or care aides; and
  • Job stress and burnout were most reported in women (64%) than men (60%) looking to switch their job or leave it in the next three years.
