To reduce the province’s 95,000-person primary care wait list, the funding model will see three family doctor clinics being paid for the number of patients they serve, as opposed to only for services provided, Currently, family physicians in N.S. are only paid for the services they provide and most limit patient visits to one issue per appointment. The pilot’s expected to expand in the coming weeks to include 30 more doctors at three additional clinics. The funding model’s expected to incentivize doctors to take on more patients to allow physicians working in the same clinic to care for each other’s patients. Doctors Nova Scotia has called for the blended model for years, pointing to provinces such as N.B. that was successful in attracting doctors with this system.
