The pilot builds on a virtual care offering that was started by the Colchester East Hants Health Centre ED staff during the onset of the pandemic. VirtualEmergencyNS is intended for those visiting the ED with health concerns that can be treated through a virtual visit. Following triage, patients eligible for virtual care are offered access to VirtualEmergencyNS and those who consent to the appointment are directed to a consult room equipped with a telemedicine cart. An on-site nurse or advanced care paramedic who can perform a physical assessment will assist the patient as needed. The VirtualEmergencyNS physician can order tests or provide prescriptions for patients directly through the platform. The province partnered with Maple to provide the technology for this initiative and, to date, 175 patients received virtual care from one of eight participating doctors.
