Studies show a nurse navigator can ease psychosocial concerns and access clinical and diagnostic services, putting patients at the forefront and ensuring they’re empowered to make informed decisions. Vancouver General Hospital’s Lung Evaluation and Assessment Program will run for two years and employ a nurse navigator with cancer care expertise to support patients, families and caregivers through the treatment process. Over the course of the pilot, doctors will evaluate wait times, length of hospital stays, readmission rates and indicators of patient well-being, to identify ways to improve other cancer programs. Lung cancer’s the leading cause of death in Canada. Over 3,800 British Columbians were diagnosed with the disease in 2021.
