UBC says lower vaccination rates among drug users, vulnerable population could lead to serious outcomes

The study investigated vaccine confidence uptake among people who use drugs in Vancouver neighbourhoods and found that as of the end of Jan., 64% reported being fully vaccinated, 9% also received a booster dose, while 16% were unvaccinated. In comparison, vaccination rates in B.C.’s general population were 81% fully vaccinated, 45% received a booster dose and 14% remained unvaccinated. Researchers warn the findings are a reminder that public health efforts must continue to address mistrust of and barriers to healthcare faced by many people in the communities who use drugs. They hope public health professionals across the country will be encouraged to invest in vaccine outreach programs for vulnerable populations.
