The Telegraph-Journal spoke to the United Way of Greater Saint John’s Executive Director Wendy MacDermott about poverty issues facing the Sussex area. MacDermott said the statistics are almost as bad as Saint John, highlighting the New Brunswick Health Council’s report that showed that in the Sussex area, more people are on social assistance than on average in the province. In N.B., on average, 5% of families with children at home receive benefits. In Sussex, it’s 7%.
