People who are alcohol dependent will be assisted by new Alcohol Care Teams and smokers will be helped to stop in a drive to see all smokers encouraged to quit. The program comes alongside prevention initiative to curb obesity and diabetes to lower demands on healthcare services. Alcohol Care Teams will be rolled out in hospitals with the highest number of alcohol-related admissions to support patients and their families with issues with alcohol misuse. This is expected to prevent 50,000 admissions and almost 250,000 bed days over five years. The teams will be based in hospitals but will also work with community services. As part of the in-hospital smoking-cessation program, partners of pregnant women will also be encouraged to kick the habit to give new mothers the best chance of not smoking again.
