In an effort to gain the attention of youth and others unlikely to be connected by traditional outreach methods, Health Canada turned to online influencers. These are individuals with a significant social media presence. It's thought these people can relay public health messages to their thousands of followers. In one case, Health Canada paid four influencers $6,600 each to produce videos warning young people of the dangers of opioid use. The Public Health Agency of Canada spent $4,000 for sponsored content on the opioid crisis on the UrbanMoms website.
