Frontline care providers decry lack of data about brain-damaging effects of opioids

While the Public Health Agency of Canada publishes statistics on the number of individuals who suffer fatal overdoses as a result of opioids, some physicians in Vancouver say there are no comparable data for people who suffer brain damage from using the drug. The doctors state that without that information, it's impossible to know how deep the problem is and what sorts of resources are needed to treat those with brain damage. As well, some families of opioid overdose victims say the only supports for those with drug-induced mental deficits are programs designed for other illnesses, like stroke.
