The U.K.’s National Health Service is the largest purchaser of fax machines in the world. It’s been ordered by the U.K. health secretary to stop buying more and to stop using the machines entirely by April 2020, as part of an effort to modernize the healthcare organization, to improve patient safety and make communications more secure. In place of fax machines, the Department of Health said secure email should be used. More than 9,000 fax machines are in use by the NHS.
