N.L. restrains seniors living in LTC facilities at twice the national average: CIHI

Statistics from the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) suggest that in the 2017-2018 fiscal year, 12.1% of senior in long-term care facilities in N.L. were restrained daily. That's more than double the national rate of 5.7%. For other jurisdictions with complete data, only Ontario was below that figure, with 4.5% of seniors being restrained. Alberta's rate was 6.1%, B.C.'s was 7.3% and Saskatchewan's was 8.5%. In Yukon, 14.2% of seniors in LTCs were restrained. The practice is employed primarily to manage seniors exhibiting behaviours associated with dementia. Data from New Brunswick was not included in the research.
