In the 2017-2018 fiscal year, the Canadian Institute for Health Information reports 135,000 pneumonia-related ER visits across the country. That represents a 13% increase from the previous fiscal year. CIHI also notes that one out of four patients diagnosed with pneumonia at an ER spent at least one night in hospital. Two-thirds of patients admitted for pneumonia were older adults, CIHI adds.
