Between 2014 and 2017, the London Health Science Centre (LHSC) discharged 5,569 patients who required alternate levels of care. However, that was after they spent a combined 108,688 days in hospital waiting for a placement in a nursing home or for home care to be arranged. In the most extreme example cited, one patient waited nearly two-and-a-half years before being discharged to a nursing home. The average length of stay at the LHSC for all reasons is 6.6 days. The pressure on hospital administrators to relieve overcrowding forced LHSC to resort to sending patient letters threatening to charge the cost of a hospital bed ($1,840 per day) to get patients who sometimes require healthcare to leave.
