Federal rules taking effect Nov. 1 will require all doctors and nurse practitioners to report how many patients are forced to leave Covenant Health's health facilities for medical-assistance-in-dying (MAiD) assessments. An Alberta woman was recently forced to have her MAiD assessment on the sidewalk after Catholic healthcare provider Covenant Health revoked permission for her to have it by her palliative bed at the Edmonton General Continuing Care Centre. Advocacy group Dying with Dignity Canada said the new reporting requirements will highlight the prevalence of forced transfers across the country. The requirements force all physicians and nurse practitioners to report when patients are referred or transferred off-site as a result of a patient's written request for MAiD.
