Physical literacy goes beyond fitness and includes the motivation, confidence and knowledge to engage in physical activities that can help throughout life. The CHEO Research Institute in Ottawa says its research is evidence that children aged eight to 12 aren’t meeting the standards of physical literacy. Among the 10,000 children in its study, only a third were found to have achieved an acceptable level of physical literacy. For example, boys and girls have aerobic fitness levels at the 30th percentile of global norms and only 20% are meeting physical activity guidelines.
