While healthcare positions have long wait times for full-time employment in Sudbury, demand for personal support workers (PSWs) it at an all-time high. College Boréal has come up with a way to ease the shortage with a pilot project helping graduates of other health-based programs, such as paramedics or registered practical nurses, qualifying and working as a PSW. Ontario requires PSWs to have a college certificate and the pilot has College Boreal letting graduates write an exam to qualify as a PSW and work at some of the region’s long-term care centres. With the pilot project, facilities can also hire eligible healthcare workers and then refer them to the college for the exam. The college will be expanding the pilot to Kapuskasing and Hearst.
