Family physicians push for longer residencies to account for home care trend

The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is consulting stakeholders such as residency program leaders, governments and regulators to determine if physician residencies should be extended beyond two years. The association states there's a growing movement towards more home care for patients. However, it contends that physicians aren't being trained in out-of-office health delivery, which a longer residency could address. To prepare physicians for new trends in medicine, the CFPC suggests a third year for medical residents, similar to what occurs in the U.K. and France.
