StatCan suggests higher-than-normal death rates from drugs, alcohol during pandemic

In 2021, 6,310 Canadians died from accidental poisoning and exposure to noxious substances, a 30% increase from 2017, at the time the height in mortality due to overdose. Among those younger than 45, there were 3,600 accidental poisoning deaths in 2021, nearly 60% of the total. Alcohol-induced mortality also increased significantly during the pandemic, with 3,790 in 2020 and 3,200 in 2019. The 18% YoY increase between 2019 and 2020 is the highest in the past 20 years. Among those under age 65, the number of alcohol-induced deaths from 2019 to 2020 increased YoY by 27% before levelling off in 2021. StatCan says there were 2,525 deaths cause by alcohol among this age group in 2021 and 3,875 overall.
