PerinatalNB 2014-2019 indicators shows continued downward trend in overall delivery rates, increase in gestational diabetes

PerinatalNB's annual report captures data from across the province over the last five years, including indicators related to maternal health, labour and delivery outcomes, and newborn health. Some key points include the following data:

  • A total of 6,355 babies were born in N.B. in 2018-19, continuing a downward trend that has been ongoing for the last five years;
  • 27% of newborns were admitted to a NICU/SCU in N.B. 2018/19 while only 17.0% of newborns were admitted to a NICU/SCU in Canada for the same year;
  • Health Zone 7 (Miramichi Area) had the highest proportion of women who smoked during pregnancy in 2018/19 at 23.7%;
  • Rates of gestational diabetes among pregnant women increased significantly and for a third consecutive year, climbing to 8.1% in 2018-19 from 6.9% in 2016-17; and
  • Rates of gestational hypertension are also increasing steadily in N.B., rising to 5.6% in 2018-19, up from 4.4% in 2016-17.
